World’s First Wikipedia Town

Monmouth, a small town in Wales, has become the first Wikipedia town in the world.

The project, which began six months ago, involved integrating over 1000 QR codes into the town, onto buildings, statues and public attractions. When somebody scans the code with their mobile phone, the code takes them to the Wikipedia page of that particular place.

To avoid users exceeding their data plans by scanning all of the codes, the council has introduced free wi-fi all over the town to let it’s civilians find out more about the village, free of charge.

I love this, it’s a great modern way to find out about the place around you. I just hope it’s not a gimmick, and soon they begin to roll out this in other more high profile places.
